




Distinctive windows on 2nd floor. This floor is much brighter than other because of this windows at in east, west, and south walls.

On the night of January 26, 1618, in a vision, one of the young vassals on duty saw a woman dressed in beautiful clothes. Handing him a brocade bag, she said, “if the load of castle enshrines me with 600kg of rice on the 26th night of every month, i will protect the castle from fire and enemy.” It is believed that because the bag was deified the castle was preserved and has survived to be the oldest castle in its original form.

Matsumoto castle town
Town has thrived around the castle for countries. There are many old building and rows of houses which show us what Japan was like years ago. You can enjoy walking on Nawate street, which was border between the samurai residences and the commoner residences in Edo era. Also there is Nakamachi street, where you can find many buildings with white and black walls known Kura Zukuri next to each other.


Former Kaichi School
this school was build in 1876 and was used for 90 years. It's the oldest elementary school designed in half-Western style in Japan.
